G13 Gallery will be hosting two solo exhibitions by local
veteran painter Hamdan Sharaani and Indonesian artist Kenyem. Held concurrently
at the two gallery space in G13, this event is a continuation of G13 Gallery’s
earlier efforts to forge closer ties between Malaysia and Indonesia through
joint art exhibitions and dialogue. In addition to celebrating the areas of
interests that unites the countries, the thematic approach for this two
exhibition aims to create awareness and appreciation for our natural environment.
Though separated geographically, the two painters Hamdan and Kenyem are connected artistically via their love for Mother Nature. While the former renders his silent meditative beauty in the visual idiom of realism, the latter chose to celebrate her splendour in semi abstract forms. However, the distinctiveness of their instantly recognizable style of painting has an unexpected visual effect which only contributes further to the delight and enjoyment of their colourful works.

Hamdan, whose forte is the depictions of multi-colour reflections on water surrounded by low lying foliage in close up views which he deftly produces an effect similar to abstraction while the stylized non-representational forms of Kenyem with the recurring leaf motif repeated as patterns in various creative formation complements the recognizable shapes of jubilant figures dancing in front and above landscapes and other sceneries. Ultimately, the depiction of nature as reflection of psychological states is what sets the works of these two painters apart from the others working in the same genre.
