MUD The Musical: Our Story of Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur City Hall has a vision to strive towards that by 2025, KL will be a world-class cultural city by offering distinct multi-cultural experiences. As a part of the Tourism Master Plan 2014-2025, Kuala Lumpur City Hall has identified the need to host regular cultural shows as a permanent fixture at iconic venues in KL to showcase its rich and diversified heritage & culture

“As my long-term commitment to the development and promotion of our arts and culture, we are making an unprecedented move to host a permanent show in one of the oldest architectures in Kuala Lumpur. A cultural musical performance that showcases our rich culture and heritage, while reflecting the history of how this beautiful city of ours came to be. A show that all tourists, both foreign & domestic, will find educational and entertaining together with KL’ites such as us, who can be proud of," said the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur.

“The first of my commitment is to restore the former glory of Panggung Bandaraya by launching this initiative of ‘MUD: OUR STORY OF KUALA LUMPUR’ as a new tourism product to the tourist industry, as well as for the people of KL. I am sure that this show will transform Panggung Bandaraya into a vibrant, lively, and significant arts hub. For the people of KL, this show allows you to discover the story of past generations that will enthrall and pique your interest.” Kuala Lumpur City Hall, in collaboration with Enfiniti Vision Media, presents a heartwarming cultural musical ‘MUD: Our Story of Kuala Lumpur.’

The story of Kuala Lumpur is in fact a short one; the city was born in the late 1850s, which means it’s relatively young. But KL, which grew from the point where two muddy rivers meet (Kuala Lumpur means "muddy confluence" in Malay), has gone through its fair share of trials and tribulations (and tributaries). As such, the city makes for a perfect backdrop for the show, which is performed in the historic Panggung Bandaraya theatre.

Based around the stories of three disparate friends who tie their ambitions to the city, the musical tells how, in its early days, KL was destroyed by a great fire, and then how it was devastated by floods.

But as the musical points out: “If you survive, you can thrive”.

MUD: Our Story of Kuala Lumpur
Tells a tale of three young men who made the journey from their village to a small tin mining town to seek their fortune. This heartwarming story is set against historical events of early Kuala Lumpur and weaves through the lives of Mamat, Meng, and Muthiah. Follow their trials and tribulations as they rise above the constant challenges of their new home, signaling the unwavering spirit of our forefathers. The show promises to be a colourful and entertaining multi-cultural experience for all – a lively musical showcasing the rich diversity of the people who built Kuala Lumpur. An inspiring tale of friendship, perseverance and finding joys in a simple cup of teh tarik.
