Mana Kuntum!

Presented by Tunas Tari

A story about Kuntum, who always finds excuses not to help her mother, Mak Tanjong with household chores. Despite her laziness, Mak Tanjong dotes on her daughter and showers her with unconditional love. One day whilst reluctantly accompanying Mak Tanjong into the woods to gather firewood to sell, Kuntum takes a rest and sits under a big tree, ignoring her mother..watching from afar. Slowly she falls asleep…

Kuntum awakens to a myriad of animals dancing around her…some attacking her, some surrounding her, some dancing with her, some forcing her to hide trembling with fear. There were Cobras, Wild Horses, Baby Elephants, Turtles, Deers, Chickens and Squirrels with each animal awakening a different emotion in Kuntum. She felt fear, anxiety, guilt, despair, regret and at the same time had moments of delight, surprise, enlightenment and euphoria. All the time Kuntum was lost, she looked tirelessly for her mother, for Mak Tanjong’s comfort and warmth, wishing that she had stayed close to her mother, helping her.

Will the Doves help bring joy and relief by showing Kuntum the way home?…..

Marble Hearts

Commemorating the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death, The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat’s 2016 Shakespeare Festival presents a modern tragedy “playing in the wings” of William Shakespeare’s King Lear‎.‎ Marble Hearts is a new play that tells the stories of three sisters—Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia—who seek to find their own way in life as their aged and abusive father descends into insanity.

The play intersects with the plot of King Lear at key moments but presents an entirely new perspective on the sisters’ hopes and fears as well as the relentless pursuit of ambition that drives them each towards seemingly inevitable self-destruction—but are they as calculative as they seem? Who is the victim and which of their stories is true?‎

Marble Hearts will feature Shakespeare’s original lines from King Lear and elsewhere as well as new dialogue in prose and modern blank verse.

7 Ideas to Get Your Creative Juices to Flow Even if You are the CEO

YOUTH needs inspiration. They need examples that they can follow. They need to learn from others who have made it. They need to learn from you - those were the words of an event organiser persuading me to give a talk to young Malaysians about how I managed to pursue my passion to be an artist despite my hectic life as a CEO in the corporate world. I took the challenge. All I had in my mind was the urge to use both the left and the right brain as the means to pursue my creative arts undertaking. After much thought, it involves a lot more than that. It involves the following 7 that I have unintentionally undertook in pursuit of my passion:

1. Find the time. If you have the time to bitch about others in the social media, then you shouldn't say you do not have the time. Block your diary as if it is part of your work commitment.

2. Don't be calculative. Go buy those canvases and paints like how you would buy pirated dvds or cigarettes or vapes and do not say you do not have the money.

3. Get your family and friends to join you. That way you simultaneously cover both hobby as well as quality time with your family and friends. I try to get my son to follow me to the studio for painting or even jamming. Recently a brother as well as a friend of mine joined me. Now my studio has 3 artists.

4. Let go of all worries. The human mind becomes very rigid if you put too much rules and regulations. Break free from the norm. Do things abnormally. You will realise how liberating it can be and that is a conducive state of mind to be creative. For example, why paint a scenery of Sawah Padi? Why not paint a scenary of Ultraman fighting Godzilla in a Sawah Padi?

5. Let others see your work. Social Media is good for this. But be open to criticisms. Some will like your work. Some will say it is crappy. Ask them why. You are then able to continue doing what is good and improve on what is bad.

6. For every work that you do, find a message that you want to deliver. That message is normally very simple but it will subconciously flow into your thought process and will manifest itself in many aspects such as the colours that you use, the objects that you choose to paint, the brush strokes and the like.

7. Don't take things for granted. Beauty is all around you. You need to pause and acknowledge the beauty and cherish it. Enjoy it. Only when you can appreciate it will it be able to work through you and be reproduced in your creative undertaking. For example, going to art shows or art museums will open your mind to the wide spectrum of art, creativity and beauty. Appreciating God and the life that He has given you is the ultimate source of inspiration.

I think 7 is enough :)

Hansel And Gretel 糖果屋

Hansel and Gretel are the children of a poor wood cutter. Fearing starvation, the wood cutter’s wife—the children’s step-mother—convinces him to lead the children into the forest, and abandon them there. Hansel and Gretel hear her plan, and gather white pebbles, to leave themselves a trail home. After their return, their stepmother again convinces the wood cutter to abandon them; this time however, they can only leave a trail of breadcrumbs. Unfortunately, the various animals of the woods eat their trail of breadcrumbs causing Hansel and Gretel to become lost.

Lost in the forest, they find a house made of gingerbread, with sugar windows, which they begin to eat. The inhabitant of the house, an old woman, invites them in and prepares a feast for them. The woman, however, is a witch who has built the house to entice children to her, so that she may fatten and eat them. She cages Hansel, and makes Gretel her servant. While she prepares to boil Hansel, she tells Gretel to climb into an oven to be sure it is ready to bake; but Gretel guesses that the witch intends to bake her, and tricks the witch into climbing into the oven, closing it behind her.

Taking jewels from the witch’s house, they set off for home to be reunited with their father, whose wife has since died. Then all anxiety was at an end, and where they lived happily ever after.

WHY PARTICIPATE?
A systematic and proper voice training course for actors is a rarity in Malaysia. While there are many vocal instructors, most of them focus on singing techniques. And although speaking and singing share some fundamental concepts, their approaches are different and not mutually replaceable.

How often do you hear a musical theatre actor sing beautifully and passionately, but when he/she starts to speak, it sounds disconnected?

Many aspiring actors (and some experienced ones, too) have to always deal with the so-called ‘voice projection’ issue. They either speak too softly, or end up shouting most of their lines. Even when the volume is appropriate, the uttered words sometimes do not seem to connect to the impulses, the intentions.

This workshop will open the door to finding and freeing your natural voice–a voice that is connected to impulses, and expresses what you (or the character) truly intend to communicate. It is not about speaking beautifully, but expressing with full intention and impact.

ABOUT KRISTIN LINKLATER’S VOICE TRAINING
Kristin Linklater is an influential voice teacher, who has developed a series of vocal training methods that have helped many–actors, public speakers and everyday communicators–to understand and improve the quality of their vocal expressions.

Her well-known students include Patrick Stewart, Donald Sutherland, Alfre Woodard and Bill Murray.
